Chalk

Chalked

In the fall of 2016, I tried experimenting with sidewalk chalk. (Specifically: Crayola Washable Sidewalk Chalk, available in 48 mostly-different colors.) I typically start each one by thinking of a character that my daughters might find interesting, and then I use Google image search on my phone to find an example that I will use as a model. From there, the process doesn't look any different from a drawing in another medium: I start with a sketch; I color it in; and I finish by adding highlights and shading. I am considering venturing away from my home sidewalks to draw new figures in public places throughout Santa Monica—maybe connecting the whole thing to a Twitter account—but I dislike having people look over my shoulder as I work, so I either need to come up with a way to get over this fear or I need to pick my first targets to be in secluded areas.
